# The Cartographer's Lie > A daily deduction puzzle set on a hand-engraved nautical survey chart. One hex > on the chart has been drawn as something it is not — the lie. Every survey note > you are given is true, and exactly one hex can satisfy all of them at once. Find > it and file your correction; you get three tries. The Cartographer's Lie is a free daily logic game, playable in any browser at https://cartographerslie.com, and as a free app on iPhone and Android. A new chart is drawn every day at 5am America/New_York, the same island for every player. It is played by reading survey notes — compass bearings, adjacency counts, sheet locations, ground types — and eliminating hexes until one remains. It is made by one person, Kevin Marsh, and launched on the web and iOS in August 2026 and on Android in October 2026. ## How it works - The board is a ~48-hex island. Each hex is a "ground" (shoal, reef, saltmarsh, scree, heath, sink) and may carry a landmark (beacon, trig point, wreck) or a reading (magnetic anomaly, tidal race). - Every note is TRUE and describes the lie. Notes never contradict each other; together they narrow the island to a single hex. - Bearings are strict: "north-east of" means north of AND east of, both at once. - Hard charts add denial notes ("the lie is not…"), which are still true — they tell you what the lie is not, so you rule out every hex the plain claim fits. - Fiendish charts add soundings: every hex prints a depth in fathoms, one is a misprint, and you name both the hex and its true depth. - The clock starts when the chart is turned over and never pauses. A refused correction adds three minutes. The judged time is what goes on the record. - A finished chart gives a spoiler-free share grid: it records when each note was struck off, never what any note said or where the lie was. ## Tiers - Casual and Standard: playable free in the browser and in the apps. - Hard: free in the apps. - Fiendish, unlimited extra charts and the full archive: part of the Cartographer's Guild membership in the apps (US$3.99 a month or US$29.99 a year; prices vary by country). - Streaks, Glicko-2 ratings, a seasonal career ladder and asynchronous duels against friends: in the apps. ## Key pages - Play today's chart: https://cartographerslie.com/ - How to play (full rules, an interactive tutorial, and a FAQ): https://cartographerslie.com/how-to-play - About the game and its maker: https://cartographerslie.com/about - Privacy policy: https://cartographerslie.com/privacy - Terms of use: https://cartographerslie.com/terms - iPhone app: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6802133271 - Android app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=app.cartographerslie.game - A shared result (chart number and outcome in the address): https://cartographerslie.com/c/212/7m41g1 ## Facts - Category: daily puzzle / logic deduction game, in the family of daily games like Wordle, but spatial rather than lexical: the clues triangulate a position. - Price: free to play; optional Guild membership in the apps. - Platforms: web browser, iOS, Android.
